Land use for gravel mining can be significantly reduced if recycled concrete is used. The Blue Angel for environmentally friendly concrete products is awarded to products that contain a lot of recycled concrete and are safe from an ecotoxicological perspective.

As cement production makes a significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, cement products certified with the Blue Angel have a lower clinker content. In addition, the manufacturer must offset any non-avoidable and non-reducible greenhouse gas emissions. To ensure that this process is transparent for consumers, the amount of emissions related to these concrete products that are offset by the manufacturer is stated in the product documentation in kg of CO2 equivalents. The methods used to offset these emissions are subject to strict rules to ensure that they help to mitigate climate change over the long term.

In the case of permeable slabbed surfaces, the Blue Angel requires that all of the rainwater that falls on the permeable surface can generally seep through it when the product is professionally installed.
